RSE at LSPS

At our school, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is taught through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which provides a structured and progressive programme from Early Years through to Year 6. This ensures that children’s knowledge and skills develop in an age-appropriate way as they grow.

RSE is primarily delivered within the Jigsaw unit “Changing Me”, where pupils learn about how their bodies, emotions and relationships develop over time. The programme is carefully sequenced so that learning builds year on year, supporting children to understand change with confidence and respect.

What children learn

Across the school, pupils develop understanding of:

- Growing and changing – from babies to adults, recognising that everyone develops at their own rate

- Body awareness – including correct scientific vocabulary for body parts, and understanding private parts and personal boundaries

- Puberty – physical and emotional changes, including menstruation and personal hygiene

- Relationships – respect, consent (in an age-appropriate way), and the importance of healthy, caring relationships

- Reproduction – by upper Key Stage 2, children learn how babies are conceived and born in an appropriate and sensitive way

- Emotional wellbeing – recognising and managing feelings linked to change, and knowing where to seek help

This learning is always taught in a sensitive, inclusive and age-appropriate way, helping children to feel safe, informed and confident.

A focus on wellbeing and respect

A key aspect of our approach is helping children to:

- Respect their own bodies and those of others

- Understand personal boundaries and safe/unsafe situations

- Develop positive self-esteem and body confidence

- Recognise different types of families and relationships

Children are encouraged to talk openly, ask questions, and identify trusted adults they can turn to for support.

Working in partnership with parents

We value the important role parents and carers play in supporting RSE. The materials shared on this page (including Jigsaw “Changing Me” overviews) provide more detail about what is taught in each year group, along with suggested questions and resources to support conversations at home.

If you have any questions about our RSE curriculum, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
